Axel Wenner-Gren invested heavily and willingly in future industries. It began with the refined vacuum cleaner, followed by the refrigerator, and then it just kept rolling. In Mexico, Axel managed to buy and develop telephone companies. In the inhospitable British Columbia in Canada, he invested in mineral extraction, hydropower, and infrastructure.
And in Cologne, he established the development company for the future railway system. Alweg, which, according to Wenner-Gren and his team, was supposed to outcompete the subway, was a monorail built to run on pillars high above street level. Unfortunately, it did not become the enormous, futuristic success they had hoped for. But to this day, there is a version of Alweg at Disneyland.
